ANCHORAGE

Anchorages off the Coast

  • There are no recommended safe anchorages off the coast for vessels waiting to enter Sydney Harbour or Botany Bay.
  • A master who decides to anchor should ensure that a careful watch is maintained for sudden changes of weather which can affect this area and may, very quickly, make such anchorage untenable.
  • Weather forecasts and warnings for Sydney coastal waters are broadcasted hourly from "Harbour Control", on VHF Channel 13. Repeat broadcasts of weather information can be obtained at any time from Harbour Control on request from a vessel.

Prohibited Anchorages

Attention is drawn to the several prohibited anchorages at the entrance to both of these ports, and in the near vicinity.
  • No vessel should anchor within or near the designated entry and departure areas "Alpha" and "Bravo" at the entrance to Sydney Harbour and "Charlie" and "Delta" at the entrance to Botany Bay.
  • There are two large cable areas, one to the north of Long Point and the other off Bondi Beach.
  • Much of the city's sewage is discharged through three submarine outfall areas, where diffuser ducts rise from the seabed. These areas are centred about 1.5 miles off the coast at North Point (North Head), Ben Buckler (North Bondi) and Boora Point (Maroubra).
